Simplifying Habit Formation Through Playful Design
Dukly is a habit-forming app concept developed as part of the Master's in UX Design at Barcelona Technology School. The project explored the psychological barriers to habit formation and designed a solution that makes getting organized less stressful and more enjoyable — particularly for early and mid-career professionals.
The challenge:
Traditional organizational tools focus on functionality but ignore the emotional side of habit formation. Users experience anxiety, stress, and frustration when attempting to get organized, and that emotional barrier is often what leads to procrastination and abandonment. Different user groups — early-career and mid-career professionals — also have distinct organizational needs that generic tools fail to address.
Approach & process:
The process started with qualitative research with 8 potential users across both target demographics, mapping their frustrations, motivations, and needs. Two personas were defined to guide design decisions across different use cases. Behavioral psychology principles, particularly atomic habits methodology, informed the product strategy throughout. The rubber duck motif was chosen deliberately as a visual and conceptual anchor — evoking simplicity, nostalgia, and approachability to counteract the negative emotions associated with organization.
Solution:
A comprehensive habit-tracking system with an intuitive home screen and two-click habit creation, a task breakdown feature that converts overwhelming responsibilities into manageable steps, and a smart reminder system designed to prompt without causing notification fatigue. Detailed progress visualizations give users control over their goals, a unified calendar integrates tasks and habits into a holistic daily view, and a gamified rewards system with points, badges, and levels provides positive reinforcement throughout.
Impact:
As a concept validated through user research, Dukly demonstrated that addressing the emotional barriers to organization — not just the functional ones — is key to sustainable habit formation. The project identified opportunities for community building and deeper personalization as natural next steps for future iterations.
